Looking at acid violence through the lens of survivor Laxmi Agarwar,Chhapaak tells the story of a girl coming from an unprivileged but humble background.When Malti (girl) refuses the advances made by a man twice her age, she is attacked with acid on a street in New Delhi. With her face irreparably burnt, Malti undergoes medico-social rehabilitation, a prolonged string of facial surgeries, a legal battle against her attacker and a constant struggle to become economically independent.
During this time, Malti also joins a campaign against Acid violence and comes across other victims. She forms an inexplicable bond with Amol, the founder of the campaign but it is Malti's game-changing PIL in the Supreme Court of India, with her lawyer Archana Bajaj, that inspires the Judiciary to amend the laws on acid vilence.A story of the triumph of the unquashable human spirit.
Deepika Padukone starrer ‘Chhapaak’ was released recently and it has managed to win the hearts of many. The film is based on the life of an acid attack survivor and her struggles. The Meghna Gulzar directorial is inspired by acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal.
Recently, Laxmi in an interview revealed that she watched the film with her daughter Pihu. She said that she wasn’t certain about how Pihu would react as the crime was committed on her mother.
Laxmi said that her daughter usually leaves a film half way, but with ‘Chhapaak’, she patiently watched it till the end. Her daughter also asked her questions and Laxmi addressed all of them. Post watching the film, she showered love on her mother and also went and hugged Deepika. Laxmi further also said that she wanted to make a video of Pihu and her reaction to the film, and show that to the world about how she felt.
Meanwhile, Bollywood actress Janhvi Kapoor was all praise for the film and Deepika. The actress took to her Instagram today and shared her views. The actress shared a still of Deepika from 'Chhapaak' and penned a sweet note for her. She wrote, ''brave, sensitive and soul-stirring'' and ''one of the most important films of our time''. And thanked Deepika, Meghna, Vikrant Massey for the movie.
